LAB EXERCISE #3 – Neutral Landscape Analysis

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Overview: In this exercise, you will learn to use the program QRULE and interpret the output in the context of the case study landscape. QRULE is a program for generating and quantifying neutral landscapes. Students will become familiar with the concept of neutral landscapes and gain a practical understanding of how to use neutral landscapes to test hypotheses regarding landscape pattern formation. Specifically, students will test the null hypothesis that the real landscape(s) is structured randomly (i.e., how likely is it that the landscape pattern could have been produced in the absence of any ecological pattern-generating processes), determine how the lacunarity pattern of the real landscape varies in comparison to random and fractal landscapes, and quantitatively show how landscape connectivity varies as a function of the interplay between species’ life history characteristics and the configuration of habitat.

Sweeney, K.E., Roering, J.J., Ellis, C., 2015. Experimental evidence for hillslope control of landscape scale. Science 349, 51–53. This study derived laboratory experiments to test the landscape evolution theory, which states that climate sets the scale of landscape dissection through the competition between diffusive and advective processes. Convex hillslopes are produced through diffusive pro...

Hill-Climbing Behavior on Quantized NK-Landscapes

This paper provides guidelines to design climbers considering a landscape shape under study. In particular, we aim at competing best improvement and first improvement strategies, as well as evaluating the behavior of different neutral move policies. Some conclusions are assessed by an empirical analysis on non-neutral (NK-) and neutral (quantized NK-) landscapes. Experiments show the ability of...

A Hierarchical Organization of Landscape Models

Due to the spatial scale at which most empirical landscape studies are performed, replica-tion is rarely feasible, and experimenters may require artiicial replication through the use of landscape models that are synthetically generated. In our view, a landscape is a heterogeneous region on the surface of the earth, and a landscape model is a simpliied representation (e.g. as a digital map) of a...

Samβada in Uganda: landscape genomics study of traditional cattle breeds with a large SNP dataset

Since its introduction [9], landscape genomics has developed quickly with the increasing availability of both molecular and topoclimatic data. The current challenges involve processing large numbers of models and disentangling selection from demography. Several methods address the latter, either by estimating a neutral model from population structure [3] or by inferring simultaneously environme...

Landscape Genomics: A Brief Perspective

Landscape genetics is the amalgamation of population genetics and landscape ecology (see Manel et al. 2003; Storfer et al. 2007). In Chapter 17, we discuss landscape genetics and provide two examples of applications in the area of modeling population connectivity and inferring fragmentation. These examples, like virtually all extant landscape genetic analyses, were based on evaluating spatial g...
